J. WEBLEY FOR LADMORE, HEREFORD
A VERY RARE CASED 120-BORE PERCUSSION REVOLVER, MODEL 'POCKET LONGSPUR', serial no. 222,
circa 1850, with blued octagonal 3 3/4in. barrel, the top-flat signed 'EDWIN LADMORE, HEREFORD', radiused muzzle with engraved band, dove-tailed fore-sight, wedge fastener for the drop-down barrel, peg for detachable rammer (absent) on the right hand side of barrel, plain six-shot cylinder with engraved band to the leading edge, border and scroll engraved moulded open iron frame, the left side signed 'JAMES WEBLEY, PATENTEE' within a scroll engraved border, long straight chequered spur to the single action hammer, small engraved trigger guard bow, chequered walnut one-piece grip with engraved domed butt-cap with central trapdoor, strong traces of finish remaining and complete with its walnut storage case, lined and compartmented in green baize and including a good Hawksley bag-shaped flask, an ebony combined cleaning/loading rod, a nipple-key, turnscrew, ball mould, wad-punch, oil bottle and cap-tin
Provenance: Previously part of the Douglas Nie collection.
Very few 120-bore Longspurs are known. Both Major William Chipchase Dowell and A.W.F. Taylerson illustrate this actual revolver in their definitive works; Major Dowell on plate 12a of 'The Webley Story' and Taylerson on page 175 of 'The Revolver 1818-1865'. The revolver was purchased by Douglas Nie from Major Dowell in 1966 and sold to the vendor in 1980
